Summary: The people who live in the pa below his cave call him Ngakau Pono, Loyal Heart, and he has been looking after the people for hundreds of years. When the Pakeha arrive in New Zealand, Ngakau Pono's people start to leave the pa. With no one left to look after, the taniwha sleeps for weeks and months and years until, finally, the sound of the karanga wakes him. The people have returned to the pa and he is not the forgotten taniwha any more.
